Meeting a Stranger

A young fairly, good-looking girl is walking on a road sparsely occupied by passers byes. After walking, some distance she stops at a small car. she opens the front door of the car and sits in driver’s sit. Now she tries to start the car but finds that the car engine is not responding. She tries repeatedly but after a few attempts comes out of the car and stands outside of the car looking annoyed and worried. It looks from her facial gestures that she probably knows a little about car engine. She now opens the bonnet of the car and tries to look into it, somewhat perplexed. Now she stands upright holding her one hand on the top of the bonnet and it appears from the face that now she is absolutely helpless. She is standing in that posture for sometime and while she was in her thoughts, all of a sudden she finds that a strange young man of strong built and good height is standing next to her and is looking at her and her small car. This surprises her and that expression is clearly on her face. She is startled and moves a little away and now stands squarely facing the man. “what is this” she demands. The man is silent for a while but then breaks the silence, “ I am sorry, I feel you need help. Can I help you start the car?”

“No, I can manage my self” she retorts purely out of her self-respect. Now she realizes her mistake and apologetically looks to the stranger and says “OK, you may try!” now she looks carefully to the man and sees that he is wearing fairly dirty cloths, may be, not washed for days on. His beard is grown such that he has not shaved for days. She understands that this man is in trouble and may be, shall ask for some money after the work. That, of course does not matter if he can start my car she talks to herself. Now she nods at the man and by hand, gesture suggests to him that he may try his hand on the car. This stranger immediately plays with some parts of the engine and asks the girl to try now by hand gestures. The girl gets into the car sitting on driver's seat tries to start the car, well, the engine roars satisfactorily. She looks a little relieved and looks to the stranger with expression of gratitude. The man is standing next to the door of driver side without any expression on his face. He was looking with quiet eyes to her. She opens her purse and takes out a hundred rupee note and holds it to him. The stranger slowly advances his powerful palm to collect the note. She says with a smile to him, “I am sorry I did not behave appropriately in the beginning and if that has disturbed you please excuse me”. She was about to put the first gear on to get the car going and at that moment the man puts his powerful hand on the window of the car and bending a little so that his face comes on line with hers, asks her, “can we talk?”

“What?” she squeaks? The face of the man looks a little worried and it appears from his expressions that he was finding difficulty to say more but there was no way and so he tells her, “mam, I need a job desperately, can you get me any work. I can even do house work, this note you have given me, will not help me for long”. Now the girl looks surprised but determent about what she should do under such situation and brushes him by saying that she cannot help him in that matter. The car is started and the girl has passed away even without looking back to the man standing on the road. But after some distance of running she realizes that this was very unfair on her part to behave like this with a man who helped her in her difficulty. Her civilized mind cursed her and now she by intuition presses the breaks of the car. Now she turns the car and comes to the spot where that stranger was standing. To her surprise and relief she sees the man standing right where they parted. But now, he is not aware of her coming back. Girl stops her car on the opposite side on the road and comes out walking straight towards him. The man is, back to her, standing looking towards a window of the shop opposite. The girl puts her palm lightly on his right shoulder. The man jerks around and finds her next to him. He intuitively moves a little away from her and now stands facing her. “What is the problem?” he blurt out. “Car problem again?” he inquires. Now, the girl is giving to him a real heartfelt smile, appreciating his innocence. She now feels that this is the one she was searching. She tells him that she can help him get a house keeping job and hints to him that he should follow her in her car. The man looks with great surprise but this time he appears to be smiling gleefully. The girl starts moving toward her car and the man follows her quietly. When both of them reach the car, the man politely requests the girl “Mom, I shall drive the car if you don’t mind”.
